My weeks with exotics

These are the notes I made during my week at an exotics vet it is the third week I have spent at the vets. I have really enjoyed my time there its been an amazing experience these notes are the new things I learnt and some of the interesting cases I saw.

⋅ with arthritis can have plasma treatment where own blood is injected into the joint and has been proven to really help the joint surface and pain.

⋅ dogs are castrated to lower confidence but have to be careful it may not help the dog. Also stop it impregnation a female. Also stops testosterone so prostate gland disappears which can cut out tumour risk and other things along increased life expectancy.

⋅ in rabbits papaloma virus can make warts these warts can remain benign however they can become malignant. When they start to turn malignant the cells can go crazy and make strange things in this case it made bone so the cells differentiate differently.

-Papillon with eye and gland problems.

-Dogs for jabs (pudsey dog) cleaning of ears. Need to clean out ears to allow stuff out hair and wax will mat together.

-Chicken ex battery euthanasia very skinny no feathers egg bound compacted crop and red thing flopped over. Best to euthanase because it was too weak can put scope up to break up egg but anything else would be too stressful.

-Terrier yearly skin allergy to pollen or mites. Steroids given to prevent infection.

-Whippet. Underactive thyroid and Underactive adrenal gland causing fur and skin problems Steroids given and improvement see.

-Bulldog had been bitten was OK but had inflamed and puss was oozing so antiinflamitry given and pain killer. Then antibiotics to be given as pills.

-Rabbit with gassey stomach taken in and given sensitivity food until eating normally.

-Collie with arthritis and pressure sores. Given Steroids and trimedol to reduce pain.

-Cat with amputated tail from last year all good.

-Cat in for check up and jab. Advised to use stronghold for fleas and treat the house with rip.

-Dog with nail bed infection. Given antibiotics for one week needs to come back if not resolved. Infection worsened by dog licking it.

-Cat with signs of thyroid problems however these can be suppressed by any other illness. Urine sample and blood samples show signs of a kidney infection. Diluted urine with white blood cells. Eating  and drinking lots but not putting on weight antibiotics given. Thought is if kidneys are fixed then the thyroid may play up but a balance needs to be reached.

-rabbit castration has to be a closed castrate because they have an opening that if the other type of castration is done the intestines can fall out the body.

- dog with bad ears cleaned under sedation very painful.

- rabbits under anaesthetic HR 250 so glucose water is given under the skin to make sure they don't wake up hypoglycaemic. When doing the dental they use braces for the teeth and file them down.

- basset hound with bad ears and a healing abscess on her back end. Which is healing well 1 weeks of antibiotics given again and o has to be careful that more infections don't form further down the line.

- boxer with eye ulcer put dye in to see how it was healing doing well blood vessels forming but adv to carry on drips and lubricating drops scar will possibly be left.

- duck put to sleep. Bone deformity due to owner feeding too much mealworms which are high in protein and encourage bone growth but if calcium isn't provided then deformities will form and bones won't grow correctly.

-rabbit spay. Very fatty between uterus. Put gel on eyes because ulcers can form and eyes are very bulgey. Go down to paper thin part so u don't have to work though the fat. Can lift fat up and out and you all comes out. So if you lift whole lot up and out you go around the ovarian blood supply so you only have to turn off one vessel and ligament can be torn. Then turn off main blood vessels and cervix blood vessels. And you are done.

- badger put down covered in wasps emaciated and dehydrated.

- x2 dog castrate when doing them if you don't cut the sack the testes are in the it cuts out a stage of the process because you don't have to stitch the hole up.

- snake ultrasound. Man came in with a smooth snake female who he thought was pregnant. He was trying to prove a theory that these snakes can become pregnant and give birth at two point in a year. The ultrasound sound was a first and it showed up really well you could see the embryos and the bones and everything.

- parrot in with neurological problems not able to land properly and falling over a lot. Taken in and given liver support food and medication I. The end owner couldn't afford it. So was taken how looking a little better however they still couldn't pin point exactly what was wrong with it and we're still awaiting a final test result. The test for beak and feather disease came back negative.

- bearded dragon came in via rspca from a house that had burnt down many of the reptile in the house had already died and some had to be put down. Some leopard geckos were washed and taken away to a care facility and the bearded dragon was taken in by the vets. It had an abscess on its left front leg which didn't look healthy. And it was very emaciated with muscle wastage all over. It wasn't eating but no operations were carried out on it because vet records had been found and it was due to be operated on by its own vets.

I didn't take many pictures during the week just because I didn't have the chance to but here are a few.
