Types of vet
There are many different types of vet which specialise in different types of animals. These days it is rare that you get a vet that practices with every I animal. Even though when you are at vet school you are taught about all of the types of animals normally a vet will chose to specialise in a single type of animal.
Small
This is a common type of vet because many people own small animals. These vets work with animals like dogs and cats which are the most common pets. They also will deal with small furry animals like rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters. They carry out routine operations like castration and spaying. They will normally see a varied case load seeing new patients, regular patients and also emergencies. Normally the work is split between surgery and consultancy.
Large
Large animal vet work on farms and with other large animals. They will normally do visits and less surgery however they will do emergency visits and routine call outs. These vets won't work souly on a single animal however they will try to work on herd health and preventative measure to ensure the health of the animals. Working with large animals dose give a very varied work load and provides many interesting and varied cases.
Exotic
There aren't many exotics vets in practice. Many are found in zoos and will mainly work there. However there are some in practice for exotics owners. They deal with things like tortoises, parrots, snakes, lizards, bats along with other things not found in the UK. Many exotics will be referred to a specialist due to the lack to exotic practices. The work load for exotics is very varied providing a wide range of cases.
Equine
These vets work souly on horses, both of working nature (racing) or pet. This provides a varied case load but does require a lot of driving to call outs plus emergencies. Most of the vets work will be done on call outs however some practices will have holding facilities for horses that they need to keep an eye on for a longer period. The work predominantly required is prevention eh. Worming and vaccination. But there are still many very varied cases.
Poultry
This strain of work includes working with chickens, ducks, turkeys and falconries. Like a farm vet these vets will do a lot of call outs to maintain herd health and prevent disease spreading. They will do emergency call outs and routine visits. They will not only do visits but also do post mortem work and a lot of lab work making sure that the poultry are safe to eat and consume the eggs so that any diseases don't spread down the food chain.
Lab based
Many different companies and drug manufacturers will have vets working in labs for them. These vets will spend most of the time in the lab but at do some outside work in testing and following trails.some of these companies include DEFRA, universities and drug companies.each vet will work in a very specific field and will be researching a very narrow field.
Referrals
These are vets who specialise in a certain field and other vets will refer cases to then for example they may deal with orthopaedics or oncology. They will receive patients who can't be helped more by their own vet. So they will receive emergencies and consultations. They will perform much surgery in their respective fields and will have high job satisfaction due to the normal severity of their cases.
These are just a few of the specialties that the veterinary profession has split into. I'm sure there are many more.
This will be my last post for a few weeks as I am about to be sitting my AS levels which I need to do well in for this blog to even become a reality.
